Quiksilver Boardriders Store, Torquay
The Quiksilver store has been an iconic part of Torquay’s life, soul and brand since its opening in 1973. But with the building and landscape in need of refurbishment it was important to keep this in mind.
Pedestrian access was improved with DDA-compliant ramps and decking, native and locally indigenous species were planted and local yellow sandstone was sourced, and placed to assist in managing pedestrian wear on the planting areas. Upstairs a green wall was constructed, quickly becoming a dense mass of glossy, attractive foliage despite the difficult microclimate.
Visitors now enjoy a store that fully reflects the thrill of surfing and experience of the coastal environment.
Apartments, Portarlington
For this high-profile site overlooking Corio Bay in addition to planting into deep-soil areas, the proposal took advantage of opportunities for upper-level planting integrated into the levels of the building.
Roof garden areas will support a range of indigenous coastal plant species providing habitat for local fauna, with habitat elements such as logs, branch perches and rocks.
Through implementation of lightweight ‘extensive’ shallow roof garden and deeper ‘intensive’ balcony planter systems a range of environmental benefits will be provided - passive cooling, reduced stormwater runoff, ecological biodiversity and habitat.
Newport Railyards
The Newport Rail Facility, Victoria’s historical home of rolling stock manufacturing, required a new logistics transfer structure to support the storage and fit out of the new High Capacity Metro Train, the largest train order in Victoria’s history.
A key component of the approval for the upgrade was ensuring that the facility was adequately screened with vegetation. Careful site recording and evaluation of existing vegetation informed a landscaping proposal that provided low-level vegetation screening that was effective, drought tolerant and low maintenance
