Master Planning Projects
Geelong Arts and Cultural Precinct Master Plan
The Geelong Gallery, Library, City Hall, Performing Arts Centre and Courthouse Theatre make up a key Cultural Precinct in the Action Plan for the revitalisation of Central Geelong.
As part of the design team led by urban planning and design consultancy Town Matters, our role was to develop an urban design proposal for Lt Malop St and adjacent spaces and laneways to facilitate full or partial road closure for events.
The Master Plan has been adopted as a key part of the vision of Geelong as an ‘arts and events city’.
Campus Environment Design Standards
As an organisation with five campuses, the challenge for Deakin University is to maintain consistent landscape treatments while reflecting the individual character of each campus.
The Campus Environmental Design Standards identifies the particular history, landscape characteristics and design direction of each campus, and provides clear guidance to facility managers and external consultants in the design and construction of outdoor spaces. It defines the style and materials palette to be used across all campuses, and where the ‘rules’ should be relaxed to allow use of bespoke custom elements.
The Standards have become a key tool to minimise maintenance costs, streamline the approvals process and to manage the landscape values of the four sites.
Smythesdale Botanic Gardens Reserve Master Plan
Smythesdale Botanic Gardens, established in the 1860’s, reflect the changing focus of botanical gardens from horticulture to recreational use.
The Golden Plains Shire facilitated this project, supporting the Smythesdale Progress Association in resolving how to plot a future for the historic former Botanic Gardens Reserve. The Progress Association saw an opportunity to increase visitors to town by promoting the reserve as an overnight stopover for caravans and campers.
Our role was to help the community identify issues and opportunities and then agree on priority actions and a plan for improving and managing the Reserve.
Quarry Redevelopment Master Plan
In realising the vision to rehabilitate a quarry as a performance space, preparing a master plan was a key step.
We assisted the WCG Committee through a collaborative design process that has allowed the stakeholders to steer the direction of the project towards a holistic solution. Subsequent development of the design included an Implementation Plan that provided the Committee with a clear set of steps forward in what is a complex and long-term project.
The Quarry Performance Space has been recognised with awards at local, state and national levels.
“We chose Perry from a field of candidates who expressed interest. He proved to be just exactly the right person for us and we loved the process he took us through“ Julie Eagles, WCG Deputy Convenor.
Campus central courtyard
Ten years after a major landscape refurbishment of the Union Green and Delacombe Court, the key central areas of the Waurn Ponds Campus, something was not quite right and PM&A was asked to find out what it was.
After delving into archives to determine the sites history, interviewing key players in its evolution and conducting detailed onsite investigation we identified that one of the main problems was that the vision the designers had for the space was never truly communicated to the maintenance staff responsible for realising it.
A detailed report was prepared that identified issues, suggested opportunities, and recommendations.
